Christmas around the world: Exploring unique traditions and festivals

por Xarxa · 27 Diciembre 2023

In this season of joy and solidarity, the Christmas spirit manifests itself in fascinating ways in every corner of the globe. From the vibrant lights that adorn the streets to the traditions rooted in history and culture, each country celebrates Christmas in its own unique way. Let's tak an exciting tour of some of the most colourful and enchanting Christmas traditions that light up the world this festive season.

1. Japan: KFC on Christmas Eve!

In Japan, Christmas Eve is commonly associated with Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) fast food. This quirky tradition began in the 1970s with a successful advertising campaign and now Japanese families pre-order their 'Christmas Party Barrels' of fried chicken to enjoy on Christmas Eve

2. Iceland: 13 'Yule Lads' bringing presents (or mischief)

In Iceland, Christmas is marked by the 'Yule Lads', a kind of mischievous elves who visit houses during the 13 nights leading up to Christmas. Each has his own personality and brings gifts or plays pranks depending on the children's behaviour. A unique and enchanting tradition that adds a touch of magic to the season

3. Mexico: La Posada and the Night of the Radishes

In Mexico, the celebration of Christmas begins with the Posadas, a series of processions depicting the journey of Mary and Joseph in search of shelter. In addition, the Night of the Radishes is a unique festivity celebrated on 23 December in Oaxaca, where artists carve giant radishes to create impressive sculptures as part of a competition

4. Australia: Barbecue on the beach

In the southern hemisphere, where Christmas coincides with summer, traditions take a sunny turn. In Australia, many families choose to celebrate with a barbecue on the beach. This is how they enjoy the warm, relaxed weather while sharing special moments with loved ones

5. Austria: Krampusnacht

In Austria, 5 December marks the celebration of Krampusnacht, a unique and somewhat spooky tradition. During this night, the streets are filled with figures dressed in spooky masks and demon costumes known as "Krampus". According to legend, Krampus accompanies St. Nicholas and punishes children who have misbehaved during the year. Although it may seem frightening, this holiday is a unique blend of the dark and the festive, with parades and events that capture the attention of locals and visitors alike

These are just some of the many ways in which the Christmas spirit manifests itself in different parts of the world. As we immerse ourselves in this global season of joy, let us remember that, regardless of traditions, we all share a desire for peace, love and happiness. Happy Holidays to all!"
